Alexander Scott.
Built in the 1750s for merchant Alexander Scott, the house began as a reflection of ambition and prosperity. Over time, it grew in stature and presence, shaped by those who saw its potential. In the 19th century, publisher William Nelson commissioned architect John Lessels to expand the property, creating the striking baronial character that still defines it today.
More than a private residence.
As the estate evolved, with the addition of gatehouses, stables and coach houses, The Scott became more than a family home. It became a place of gathering, learning and quiet significance, woven into the life of the city around it.
In the 1940s, the estate entered a new chapter when it was gifted to the University of Edinburgh by Scottish physician and philanthropist Donald Pollock. For decades, the house served as a student residence, its rooms animated by learning, friendship and the rhythms of university life. That legacy of welcome, connection and discovery continues today, shaping The Scott's character as much as its architecture.
Reimagined.
Its role has continued to evolve. Thoughtfully restored in the early 21st century, the house was reimagined as a hotel that honours its heritage while welcoming a new chapter.
Today, The Scott combines historic character with contemporary comfort. Original features have been carefully preserved, while artwork, textiles and furnishings by Scottish artists and designers bring warmth, texture and a distinct sense of place. The result is a house that feels both timeless and unmistakably Edinburgh.
